AT&T Announces FaceTime over Cellular Will Need Mobile Share Plan. No One Is Surprised.
As reported by various Apple blogs, AT&T won’t let you use the upcoming iOS6 feature which allows you to use FaceTime over cellular unless you switch to their Mobile Share plans. You can’t even buy this feature at any price if you are on an Individual or Family plan. If you want to use that feature, you have to change to a Mobile Share plan. This is just another way AT&T is trying to suck any good will from it’s current customers.
While I have no use for FaceTime over cellular, I am curious what AT&T will do when the next iPhone comes out with 4G built in. My wife and I are two of the few remaining holdouts still using the unlimited data plan which was introduced back in 2007 when the iPhone came out. We’ve been “grandfathered” in through all of the data plan restructuring at AT&T over the years. If AT&T decides not to allow us to extend our unlimited plan to the new iPhone with 4G, I’d have to seriously consider what telco my money will go to when the new iPhone arrives. We shall see.
