Weekender #16
Myna birb update: And then there was one. Only one myna baby comes by daily with Handsome. No sign of the sibling at all. Just like Handsome’s mate, Shpeedy, it just disappeared and never showed up again. This is the part about birds that sucks. I’ll never know what happened to it. I’ll just have to wonder.
In other birb news: as I was getting ready to work on a project this past Tuesday, I heard a commotion outside and went to investigate. Looking through the kitchen door, I saw a mountain dove flopping around on the ground like a fish in my driveway while other birds stood around, seemingly stunned. It was lying on its side and attempting to get up on its feet. It then tried to fly away, but in the process, landed on its head. I called Audra to come outside to take a look at what was going on.
At first glance, it seemed like the bird may have been attacked, but there wasn’t any blood and there weren’t any feathers floating around. It seeed like it couldn’t move its legs. They were stuck and limp looking. I picked it up gently and wrapped it in a towel to stabilize it. We found a box to place it in and tried our best to make it comfortable. Eventually, the bird calmed itself a bit and sat in the box while we tried to figure out where to take it for care.
We drove to the Humane Society, but they seemed to be closed. Little did we know that their emergency animal reception was in a different location. We found that out after calling them when we got home. They suggested that we take the bird to Feather and Fur Animal clinic in Kailua. After a brief phone consultation with them, we got into the car and headed over to the other side of the island. When we arrived, a vet assistant came to take the bird and that’s the last I’ve seen of it. Hopefully, whatever was the issue was, the vets at the clinic were able to help or at least ease any pain.
I was disappointed to learn that Panic is going to discontinue Code Editor for iOS. Similar to their decision to discontinue Transmit for iOS, the reason seems to be that the market for “pro” apps on iOS doesn’t generate enough sales to keep it going. The other is that a significant number of web developers require the ability to build or compile code, which wouldn’t be possible on iOS without a way to install additional libraries. I was really hoping that Nova, Panic’s code editor for macOS would be released on iOS eventually. I guess that’s not meant to be. I have some thoughts on where Apple needs to go with iOS, especially iPadOS, but I’ll save that for later.
This week, The Black Keys released their 10th album, Delta Kream. I’m not a huge Black Keys fan, but enjoyed their take on some classic blues standards. Listen: Apple Music | Spotify
